Dialysis Presentation:
Reflection:
The entire process of dialysis was extremely fascinating to me. I never knew about this alternative method to kidney failure. Approximately 17,000 kidney transplant go through every year, each one costing about $260,000. Many families can't afford this procedure and are put on waiting lists. With dialysis, we can strive to improve patient's health state, in regards to cleansing their blood. Also, I found the dialysis machine to use concepts in biology as well as physics. For example, in the dialysis machine, waste is diffused out of the blood into the dialysis fluid. The used dialysis fluid is then transported to a separate container. To push the fresh dialysis fluid into the dialysis machine, a tank of compressed air is used, a concept learned in physics. In conclusion, I was most impressed by the future benefits dialysis can bring, and how the dialysis machine incorporates applies multiple sciences.
The two things our group did well was research and creativity. Our group spent most of the time researching dialysis. It was pivotal for us to fully understand dialysis and the dialysis machine. We researched about human waste, statistics on kidney failure, the invention of the dialysis machine, and how the dialysis machine involved diffusion. Secondly, our group was one to think outside the box. We didn't want to be the people on the screen talking, but we would do voice overs. Our solution was claymation. On one Sunday, we fiddled with Play-Do to create a dialysis machine replica and a diffusion diagram. We took a picture of each step of the dialysis machine and the movement of the molecules across a membrane. After editing, the dialysis machine showed the progression of the dialysis machine and where the blood was pumped. The diffusion scene actually looked like molecules were slowly moving across the membrane. All in all, I felt our video was successful in terms of quality information and originality.
Two things our group struggled in time management and analyzing our audience. Our group wasted a lot of time in the beginning. When we were given time after lunch to work on any projects that are due soon, we tended to be lackadaisical about it. We would research and maybe write a little of the script. Once the video was due in four days, we started having to cram. We barely finished in time, and a lot of the work was placed on the person with the video editing system. In hind sight, I would have used our time efficiently and have been productive. Second of all, I would have focused our video on the elderly people as said in the assignment. Our grandmas are supposed to comprehend the information said about dialysis. Our explanation is simple, but it is geared towards little children. We have cute colorful characters explaining the information. Maybe clear diagrams would just be enough to explain dialysis to our grandmothers. To sum it up, being more productive and concentrating on the project's details would have improved our dialysis video.
Our group consisted of Mikayla DeBarros, Cate Guempel, Bronte Hoefer, and me. I would give Cate a 20 in leadership because she was in charge of the video editing. Whenever we needed something to do, she knew exactly what we could do to contribute to the project. I would give Bronte and Mikayla 19's in leadership because they both gave great ideas but were more of the diligent worker type. I would give Cate, Bronte, and Mikayla 20's in collaboration. All of us worked hard on the project, and tried to help with the video. We all worked really well together and respected each other. I would give Bronte, Mikayla, and Cate 20's in attitude and demeanor. Despite working until the last minute. everyone kept a positive attitude and we were polite to one another. I would give Bronte, Mikayla, and Cate 19's in facilitation and mediation. Cate brought her laptop everyday to school, Bronte brought Play-Do for the claymation figures, and Mikayla always kept us on task. The only problem was this was all towards the end of the project when we should have took advantage of the time given early to us to work. Lastly, I'd give Bronte, Mikayla, and Cate 19's in empathy. We all respected each other and had fun with the project, but we should have valued multiple ideas instead of just our one major plan. All in all, it was a fantastic group to work in, especially because we all got along so well.
